11 Things We Are Building from Pallets at Lusitano Retreat

A complete visual guide to every pallet build planned for Lusitano Retreat — from the fire pit terrace to the outdoor kitchen, open-air cinema, and sun loungers. Materials cost, step-by-step build order, and the reasoning behind each project.

11 Things We Are Building from Pallets at Lusitano Retreat

The first thing most retreat developers do when they arrive on site is order furniture. We are doing the opposite. Before any structural build begins at Lusitano, we are assembling an outdoor living environment from reclaimed European pallets — because pallets are free, honest, warm-looking, and completely aligned with what Lusitano is supposed to be: a place built by hand, from what is already here, at as close to zero cost as possible. What follows is the full build plan — eleven projects, in the order we intend to complete them.

The Fire Pit Zone on a Pallet Deck is the social centrepiece. Six pallets laid flat form a level platform. Pallet benches are arranged around a central fire pit. Add cushions, throws, and string lights — the result is an evening gathering space that costs under €150 in materials and looks like something from a design magazine. Build sequence: level the ground, lay the platform, build the benches, mark the fire pit, add atmosphere. Duration: one long weekend.

The Pallet Terrace with Steps introduces elevation and view framing. Two levels of pallets, screwed together, create a split terrace with simple wooden steps between them. At Lusitano, the upper level will face the hillside; the lower level will hold seating. Finishing with deck boards and wood sealer protects the structure for three to five seasons. Build time: two weekends. Materials cost: under €80.

The Pallet Herb Wall turns a single upright pallet into a living green screen. Set the pallet vertically, brace it securely, attach boards as planter boxes, line with horticultural foil to protect the wood from moisture, and plant herbs directly. At Lusitano we plan mint, lavender, rosemary, and thyme. The herb wall doubles as a privacy screen between the outdoor kitchen and the relaxation zone — function and beauty in one structure.

The Pallet Modular Wall is how you build outdoor rooms without building walls. Two or three pallets stood vertically are screwed together and mounted on solid timber feet — no ground fixings, no cement. One face stays raw pallet wood; the other accepts a woven fabric infill panel for softness and wind break. A planter box fixed to the top edge adds height and greenery. At Lusitano, the modular wall will separate the herb wall zone from the outdoor kitchen approach, and a second unit will create a buffer between the fire pit area and the relaxation deck — giving guests a sense of defined, private space without any permanent structure. When the retreat layout evolves, the walls move with it. Build time: one day. Cost: under €60 in timber, screws, and sealant.

The Pallet Terrace — the simplest build in the plan — is a flat deck of pallets arranged tightly side by side, topped with boards, sanded, and sealed with wood oil. No elevation, no steps: just a level, smooth outdoor floor in a location that currently has rough ground. This becomes the yoga platform, the morning coffee zone, and the afternoon reading spot depending on the hour. Build time: one day. Materials: pallets, decking screws, wood oil.

The Pallet Movie Screen is the most unexpectedly impressive build in this collection. Two vertical pallet towers are built as a stable frame. A crossbeam is fixed at the top, and white outdoor fabric is attached as a projection surface. A projector on a small pallet table behind the seating area completes the setup. String lights around the perimeter. Evening cinema under the Portuguese sky, assembled from reclaimed timber and a borrowed projector, at essentially zero cost.

The Pallet Bench with Storage solves a specific problem at every shared retreat: where do guests put their things in the communal outdoor space? The bench is two pallets joined as the seat base, with a hinged lid (storage compartment underneath), a backrest screwed at the right angle, and soft cushions on top. Optional: a small side table at pallet height. Sand everything smooth. Wood sealer. Total build cost at Lusitano: under €40.

The Outdoor Pallet Kitchen is the heart of every shared day. Pallet modules stacked to counter height, topped with a stone slab worktop and fitted with a deep sink and open shelves for equipment storage. The open-shelf design means everything has a place and everything is visible — no rummaging. A firewood storage bay is built into the lower modules. Herbs grow on the wall directly above. Cost at Lusitano: under €80 in materials for the pallet structure; the stone countertop is sourced locally.

The Pallet Chair and Side Table set is the standard seating unit for the relaxation zones. Two pallets form the seat base; a half-pallet screwed at the back provides the backrest. Sand all surfaces smooth with 80-grit and then 120-grit paper. Apply two coats of outdoor wood oil. Add a thick, outdoor-rated cushion. The result: a chair with the visual weight and warmth of bespoke garden furniture, built in three hours. The matching side table is one pallet at the right height, legs cut to level it, sealed.

The Pallet Deck and Pergola is the centrepiece of the main relaxation area at Lusitano Retreat. Six pallets form the platform. Four timber corner posts are fixed into the ground. Overhead beams and cross-beams create the pergola frame; linen curtains are draped for shade and privacy. The result is a defined outdoor room — a zone where guests feel enclosed and sheltered without being indoors. Build time: two weekends with two people. Materials cost: approximately €200 including timber posts, hardware, and fabric.

The Pallet Sun Lounger is the last project and the most immediately recognisable. Two pallets joined end-to-end form the base. A third pallet, hinged at the right angle, forms the adjustable backrest. Wheels at one end allow it to be repositioned throughout the day to follow the shade or the sun. An outdoor-rated foam cushion completes it. Build time: two hours. Cost: under €30. At Lusitano we plan five of these — one per caravan guest unit — so guests can move their lounger to wherever the afternoon is best.

The total material cost for all eleven projects, assuming pallets are sourced free from local logistics companies and timber merchants (standard practice in rural Portugal), is approximately €600–€800 including all hardware, sealers, cushions, and fabric. The equivalent in purchased garden furniture would be €5,000–€12,000. The pallet builds are not a compromise. They are the aesthetic. Raw, warm, handbuilt, honest — which is exactly what Lusitano Retreat is supposed to feel like.
